What Pokémon FireRed Reignited & LeafGreen Regrown changes
How the game plays differently from Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen, then every stat, type and ability it alters next to what the official games do.
How the game plays
FireRed Reignited and LeafGreen Regrown are one game in two versions, built from the FireRed source code by SpikeCation. The aim is the one the Legacy games set: keep Kanto feeling like Kanto, and fix the things about it that have annoyed people for twenty years. Every Kanto and Johto Pokémon can be caught in either version, cross-generation evolutions are back, trade evolutions happen on a level-up or with their held item instead of needing a second console, and the Pokémon that were never worth using got stats, abilities and movesets that make them worth using. Trainer teams were rebuilt to match, and the gyms answer to how far you already are — each leader has several teams and the game picks the one that fits the badges you already hold, so you can take Kanto in almost any order. Before you leave home you pick Normal, Hard or Hardcore: Hard caps your level at the next gym leader's best Pokémon, forces set battle style and takes items away in battle; Hardcore does all of that and makes a fainted Pokémon stay fainted. The Sevii Islands carry most of the postgame — a run of superbosses, the Johto gym leaders, gym leader rematches, a treasure hunt and the roaming legendaries — and a wish granted on Route 10 swaps in a second set of wild tables across almost the whole region, which is where the Hoenn Pokémon live. Every table on these pages is read from the creator's own source code, FireRed and LeafGreen side by side.
Normal, Hard and Hardcore
You choose before you leave home, and the choice sticks for the save. Normal is the ordinary game. Hard forces the set battle style, stops you using items during a battle, and caps how far your team can level. Hardcore is Hard plus permanent death: a Pokémon that faints cannot be healed or revived, and losing a battle outright reloads your last save.
Trainer teams are the same in all three. Nothing on these pages changes with the difficulty you pick — only the rules you play under.
The level cap, and where each number comes from
On Hard and Hardcore, a Pokémon at or above the cap stops gaining experience, stops levelling in the day care and cannot be levelled by a Rare Candy. It still gains effort values from a battle. The cap is not a fixed list: the game looks at the next gym leader, Elite Four member or Champion you have left to beat and uses the highest level in their own team, so beating gyms out of order moves the cap with you. The cap is lifted entirely once you are Champion.
The numbers below are read from those teams. The creator's own documentation lists the same figures, with Sabrina given as 49 rather than 50.
| Next fight | Cap |
|---|---|
| Brock | 14 |
| Misty | 21 |
| Lt. Surge | 25 |
| Erika | 35 |
| Koga | 43 |
| Sabrina | 50 |
| Blaine | 53 |
| Giovanni | 55 |
| Lorelei | 58 |
| Bruno | 59 |

The gyms answer to your badges
Lt. Surge, Erika, Koga and Sabrina each have several teams, and their gym picks one from the badges you already hold. Beat Koga first and Erika turns up with a Level 43 team instead of a Level 35 one. Every version of every leader is listed on the trainer pages, each one saying which badges bring it out.
The wish that brings Hoenn to Kanto
A Jirachi sleeping in a rock on Route 10 can be woken once the island quest is finished, which is after you become Champion. Making the wish swaps in a second set of wild tables on 51 maps across Kanto — the same routes and caves, different Pokémon, mostly Hoenn ones. Where a map has one, its second table is listed under the first and marked as the postgame table.
Two versions, one game
Reignited is the FireRed build and Regrown is the LeafGreen build of the same source. Both can catch everything, but some Pokémon arrive earlier on one side: Viridian Forest has Oddish in Reignited and Bellsprout in Regrown, Route 9 has Pinsir against Scyther, Route 16 has Murkrow against Sneasel, and the trade on the Underground Path hands over a Ponyta in one and a Cubone in the other. Use the version picker at the top of a page to see one side at a time.
Field moves and what unlocks them
The badges that switch each field move on are not the ones you may remember: Flash needs the Boulder Badge, Cut the Cascade Badge, Fly the Thunder Badge, Strength the Rainbow Badge, Surf the Soul Badge. Rocks break with Rock Smash once you have the Thunder Badge from Lt. Surge, which is what opens Mt. Moon Square and the floor under Rock Tunnel. Cut trees and smashed rocks stay gone.
Ghost and Dark swapped sides
This is a Generation III engine, so a move is physical or special because of its type. The game moves Ghost to the special side and Dark to the physical side, which is the opposite of the original games. The category shown for every move here is the game's own.
From the game's own code and map scripts, and from the level cap table in the creator's documentation sheet.
The main changes
- FireRed Reignited and LeafGreen Regrown are the same game built twice; 63 wild tables differ between them and both are listed, each labelled with its version
- Every Kanto and Johto Pokémon is catchable in either version, with cross-generation evolutions restored and 278 species given a place to find them
- Trade evolutions no longer need a trade: they happen on a level-up, or with the item they would have been traded holding
- Optional difficulty: Hard caps your level at the next gym leader's best Pokémon and takes items away in battle, Hardcore makes fainting permanent
- The gyms scale to your progress — each leader has several teams and the game picks the one that matches the badges you already hold
- A wish granted on Route 10 in the postgame replaces the wild tables on 51 maps, which is how the Hoenn Pokémon reach Kanto
- New and reworked places: Mt. Moon Square and a floor under Rock Tunnel behind smashable rocks, a cave under Two Island, and rebuilt maps around Cinnabar and Mt. Moon
- Postgame on the Sevii Islands: the Johto gym leaders, nine Sevii Masters, eleven Mirage trainers, gym leader rematches, an Elite Four rematch and Professor Oak twice
- 149 wild areas, 712 trainer fights (91 of them bosses), 277 items and 58 machines placed from the game's own scripts
How the Pokémon change
Measured from the guide's own data, so it can't drift from the pages it links to.
Compared against present-day official data. The Fairy type and hidden abilities arrived after Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen, so a difference here can belong to the series rather than to this hack.
