What Poke47 changes

How the game plays differently from Pokémon Emerald, then every stat, type and ability it alters next to what the official games do.

How the game plays

Poke47 is an Emerald game by luuma, rebuilt from the ground up on the modern pokeemerald-expansion engine as a from-scratch successor to the creator's earlier Altered Emerald. Every Pokémon from the first three generations is gone, replaced by around 350 from the fourth through the seventh, each with a rebuilt movepool and abilities, and all of them handed the items, moves and abilities the newest official games use. The change you notice first is that wild Pokémon are not hiding: they walk around the map where you can see them, so you choose your fight instead of taking whatever steps into you. The Pokémon following you can be sent to fight them on its own, a Scarlet and Violet idea the creator wrote from scratch on top of the follower code. Around that sit a long list of conveniences — reusable TMs and tutors, HMs handed out early, a rebuilt Pokédex, berry farming worth doing, the PC from the party menu, move and TM relearning from the summary screen — plus new routes, a rebuilt Game Corner with its own minigames and gacha machines, and Gauntlet Island, a run-based mode you enter with one Pokémon and climb through five altars, each raising a level cap of its own. The main game's level cap is optional and literal: it is a hat, and taking it out of your bag turns the cap off. The creator states that no AI was used in making the game.

The wild Pokémon are walking around

Instead of waiting in the grass, wild Pokémon appear on the map as sprites you can see, approach or leave alone. Which ones appear, at what levels and how often is the same table this guide lists under "Overworld" for each area. Ordinary random battles have not been switched off: walking in grass and using Sweet Scent still start one, and they draw from that same table, so nothing in these lists is unreachable the old way. A few Pokémon are hand-placed on a map rather than spawned from a table; those are the ones listed as standing there waiting for you.

Your follower can fight for you

The Pokémon walking behind you can be let off the lead with a button press, and it will chase down wild Pokémon on the map and battle them without you. Different species behave differently once they are loose — some hunt, some wander. The experience goes to the Pokémon that did the work, so this is how a lot of the grinding in this game gets done.

The level cap is a hat, and you can take it off

The cap is an item you carry. While it is in your bag, a Pokémon at the cap stops gaining experience altogether; drop the item and the cap is gone. The numbers are keyed to badges: 10 until you have rescued the professor, then 13, and 17, 23, 26, 28, 30, 38 and 40 as the eight badges come in. Each of the Elite Four lifts it by one — 49 going in, then 50, 51, 52 and 53 — and beating the Champion removes it. Below the cap the game hands out roughly double experience to help you catch up, so the cap sets the pace rather than grinding does. Gauntlet Island runs a separate, much lower set of caps of its own.

Gauntlet Island, a run you start from nothing

A boat on Route 100, south of your home town, takes you to an island you enter with exactly one Pokémon and none of your things. The island shuffles itself: it seeds its own run, scatters about two dozen item balls at random, and sets the level cap to 7. Five altars sit across the island and each one you finish raises that cap — 7, then 14, 19, 25 and 31. Between them you draft upgrades: over two hundred of them, sorted into five tiers from ordinary to one-of-a-kind, each tied to one of six altars grouped by type — grass, bug and poison; water, ice and fairy; fire, electric and dragon; ghost, dark, psychic and normal; rock, steel and ground; fighting and flying. The more you have taken from one altar, the more of that altar's upgrades you are offered. Losing is not the end of it: a run pays out points you spend on a better start next time. The island's four corners have wild tables of their own and they are listed in this guide; the fights inside a run are generated as you go, so there are no rosters to publish.

The conveniences

TMs and move tutors can be used again and again. The HMs arrive early rather than being strung out across the story. You can reach the PC from the party menu, and relearn level-up moves and TMs straight from a Pokémon's summary screen. Berry growing has mutations, weeds and pests to deal with. The Game Corner has been rebuilt with minigames and two gacha machines that hand out Pokémon. Trainers you have beaten can be fought again with stronger teams, and those teams are in this guide as separate fights.

From the game's own documentation and the creator's published source.

The main changes

  • Hoenn restocked with Pokémon from generations four to seven — 559 species and forms in all, with rebuilt movepools and abilities, and every item, move and ability from the newest official games given to them
  • Wild Pokémon walk around the map in plain sight, so you pick your fight; grass and Sweet Scent still start ordinary battles from the same tables
  • The Pokémon following you can be sent off to fight wild ones by itself, and different species go about it differently
  • An optional level cap you carry as an item, keyed to badges: 13 before the first gym, rising to 40 by the eighth and 53 through the Elite Four
  • Gauntlet Island: a run-based mode entered with a single Pokémon, with its own level caps, randomised item drops and a draft of over 200 upgrades
  • 37 moves the official games do not have, 17 more with changed numbers, a rebuilt Game Corner with gacha machines, and a handful of new routes
  • 90 areas with wild tables, 824 moves, 109 TMs and HMs, 451 items placed on the map and 829 fights from 552 trainers, rematch teams included

How the Pokémon change

Measured from the guide's own data, so it can't drift from the pages it links to.

Compared against present-day official data. The Fairy type and hidden abilities arrived after Pokémon Emerald, so a difference here can belong to the series rather than to this hack.
