What makes it different

A Pokémon × Etrian Odyssey crossover on FireRed: eight Strata of labyrinth instead of routes and gyms, every battle a double battle, and a new Aether type.

More about the game

Pokémon Odyssey is PacoScarso's FireRed hack set in Talrega, an island whose Yggdrasil Labyrinth draws adventurers the way a league draws trainers. You play Nyx, a new recruit to the Adventurers Guild, and the game is shaped like the Etrian Odyssey series it borrows from: instead of routes and badges you descend through eight Strata, each with its own level cap, roaming F.O.E.s, gathering and mining points and a Guild captain to beat at the bottom. There are no gym leaders, no evil team and no Elite Four; the pace comes from the story, nearly forty sidequests, and Naval Explorations across the Sea of Galazeah that open up the surrounding islands. Every battle is a double battle. Around a hundred Etrian variants — regional forms modelled on Etrian Odyssey monsters and character classes — sit alongside a rebalanced Kanto-to-Hoenn dex with some later additions, a new eighteenth type called Aether, new moves and abilities, and the game's own soundtrack. Difficulty (Easy or Hard) and level caps are chosen in game.

What's different, point by point

  • A new region and story: the Talrega Guild and the eight Strata of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, with no gyms, evil team or Elite Four
  • Every battle is a double battle, including wild encounters and the 50 documented boss fights
  • 100 Etrian variants — regional forms drawn from Etrian Odyssey's monsters and classes — among 411 species, every one rebalanced
  • Aether, an eighteenth type in place of Fairy: 32 species and 28 moves carry it
  • 102 new moves and 93 moves with changed numbers, plus new abilities, on a physical/special split
  • F.O.E.s roaming the floors, Naval Explorations, gathering and mining, a Guild shop that levels up, and 38 sidequests
  • 66 wild tables with levels and rates, 50 TMs all placed, 13 move tutors and 195 items located

What this guide covers

Every guide here is built from the game's own documentation. Where a ROM hack changed something but never published the numbers, this says so rather than quietly filling the gap with the original game's — which would be worse than leaving it out.

SectionSource
Wild Pokémon by areaFrom the game itselfEvery wild table in the creator's sheet: the main game, the post-game events, the Sea of Galazeah by tier, and the Wonder Trade pool.
Encounter ratesFrom the game itselfPercentages are the creator's own. The four ordinary sea tables list species without rates, and one-off events say Event, Sidequest or Trade instead of a number.
Wild levelsFrom the game itselfEvery level or range is the creator's own, including the ranges the sheet had stored as dates.
Stats, abilities and movesetsFrom the game itselfBase stats, types, abilities, level-up learnsets, TM and tutor compatibility and evolution methods for all 409 species in the Talrega Dex, plus the two Abyssal God parts from the boss guide.
TM and HM compatibilityFrom the game itselfThe game's 50 TMs with per-species compatibility from the dex. There are no HMs; field moves are key items.
Where TMs are foundFrom the game itselfWhere each TM is, from the creator's TM sheet; 50 of 50 are placed.
Trainer and boss teamsFrom the game itselfBoss fights only — 50 of them, Hard Mode rosters, from the creator's boss sheets. Not every trainer in the game: ordinary field trainers are not documented, and Easy Mode teams are not published.

Reading the tables

SourceEvery number here is read from the documentation the creator links from the game's Hackdex page: the Talrega Dex (species, moves, abilities, learnsets, TM and tutor compatibility, evolutions, the type chart) and three spreadsheets (wild tables, items, shops, TM locations, tutors, Wonder Trade; level caps, boss rosters, sidequests). Nothing is filled in from FireRed or from memory.

EtrianIn this game an Etrian variant replaces the ordinary species outright — there is no plain Ekans, only the Poison/Aether one. The creator's dex lists them under the plain name; this guide calls them "Ekans (Etrian)" so the official sprite is never shown for a creature that looks nothing like it, and so the comparison with FireRed reads as a form. The bracket is this site's; the list of which species are variants is the creator's own "Etrian Variants" tab, and each variant's page credits its artist.

SpritesThe dex art on the Etrian variants, the Battle Bond forms and Gorochu is the game's own, taken from the Talrega Dex the creator links players to, hosted here and credited above to the artists the creator's sheet names per form. The Abyssal God, its parts and the four legendary bosses have no art in the dex and show none. Like screenshots, this art comes down at once if the creator or an artist asks.

FormsGrimer, Muk, Voltorb and Electrode are their Alolan and Hisuian forms, as the creator's encounter sheet spells them. Battle Bond forms (Blaziken, Kecleon, Mawile, Plusle, Minun) are separate species in the dex and are listed as such.

LevelsWild levels and rates are the game's own. The creator's sheet stores some level ranges as dates ("2-4" became 2 April); those are turned back into ranges and were checked by hand against the live sheet.

FoeF.O.E. rows are single roaming Pokémon at a fixed level, listed with their moves. They are far above the floor's level on purpose.

TrainersThe creator publishes rosters for the boss fights only — captains, story bosses, sidequest bosses, the post-game rematches at Lixin's Café, the Abyssal God, the Lords of the Sea and the sea bosses — and only their Hard Mode teams. Ordinary trainers met in the field are not documented and are not listed. Levels shown are the Hard Mode rosters' own; Easy Mode is not published.

StagesStages are the game's own Strata with the level caps the creator lists. Side areas and islands are placed at the Stratum whose cap matches the levels the game uses in them; a boss is placed at the later of its area and its level. Treat a stage as "about when you get here", not a locked door.

SeaThe Sea of Galazeah is one page with a method per tier of Naval Exploration, because the tables change as you clear Strata. Islands you find by sailing (Varley, Arundel, Charon, Gorenil) have their own pages.

AetherAether is the game's eighteenth type and Fairy does not exist. Its matchups are on the guide page, from the game's own chart. Move categories follow the game's physical/special split.

MovesA move marked as changed differs from FireRed in type, power, accuracy or PP; a move FireRed never had is marked new. Descriptions are the game's own.

ItemsItems are listed by area with how they are found: chests, hidden items, NPCs, quest rewards, F.O.E. drops, gathering and mining points, shops (the Guild shop's stock grows with its level, Napier's shop with treasures recovered) and the Pickup table.

PartsTentacle and Abyss Eye are the parts of the Abyssal God. They are not in the Talrega Dex; their stats and moves come from the creator's boss-fight guide, and they exist here only so the fight can be shown. Their signature moves Demon Rage (100 power, 100% accuracy, 15 PP, 20% flinch) and Rising Claw (100 power, 100% accuracy, 15 PP, high critical-hit rate) are not in the Talrega Dex and the guide gives no type for them, so they are not on the moves page.
