What makes it different

A Johto reboot on FireRed's engine, still being built: eight badges, a Rocket takeover, Mega Evolution mid-story and PokéRides in place of HMs.

More about the game

Pokémon GS Chronicles is a FireRed hack by Ruki Studios that retells Gold and Silver rather than remaking them: the towns and the badge order are Johto's, the maps take after HeartGold and SoulSilver, and the events around them are the team's own. It runs on a heavily modified Complete FireRed Upgrade, so it carries the physical/special split, the Fairy type, Gen 4–8 moves, Mega Evolution during the main story, a day-and-night cycle with time-based encounters, and a set of PokéRides that stand in for HMs. Build 2.7.6 (June 2024) runs from New Bark Town through the eight Johto gyms to the Pokémon League and stops at the gym rematches; Kanto is promised but not in this build. This guide is built from the team's documentation sheet and their source repository, and says so wherever the two cannot vouch for what a player of 2.7.6 actually sees.

What's different, point by point

  • A Johto story rebuilt from scratch with HGSS-style maps, new events and a few new characters
  • Mega Evolution in the main story, with 38 Mega Stones the sheet places, and Z-Moves promised for the Kanto post-game
  • PokéRides instead of HMs: Bright, Sharp, Crush, Wave, Skydive, Heavy, Whirl, Clamber and Cascade Rides, each picked up along the way
  • Day and night encounters, a regional dex of 448 species with 21 of them given new base stats
  • 120 TMs, reusable, with 53 of them located so far; 13 move tutors
  • 69 documented boss fights through the League and the scaling gym rematches

What this guide covers

Every guide here is built from the game's own documentation. Where a ROM hack changed something but never published the numbers, this says so rather than quietly filling the gap with the original game's — which would be worse than leaving it out.

SectionSource
Wild Pokémon by areaFrom the game itselfEvery area on the sheet's Pokémon Locations and Fishing tabs, plus its gift, static and trade Pokémon. Wild lists do not separate day from night or land from water — the sheet does not. The documentation sheet
Encounter ratesNot published by the creatorThe sheet marks its walking and surfing rates as work in progress and only gives them for a few areas, so none are shown for wild lists. Rod rates are the sheet's and are shown. The documentation sheet
Wild levelsNot published by the creatorNeither the sheet nor the repository gives wild levels for the tables used here. Ask in the GS Chronicles Discord

TM and HM compatibilityFrom the game itselfThe sheet's full TM list. TM compatibility is not published, so no per-species TM lists are shown. The documentation sheet
Where TMs are foundFrom the game itself53 of 120 TMs located by the sheet; the rest are marked as not found yet. The documentation sheet

Reading the tables

VersionTwo sources, neither frozen at build 2.7.6. The documentation sheet is a living document with no version stamp and a few sections it marks as work in progress; the source repository is the team's current development tree, over a year past the June 2024 build, and its trainer tables already use regional forms and Kanto trainers that are not in 2.7.6. Where a number here does not match your game, that is why.

ScopeBuild 2.7.6 is unfinished. It covers Johto: eight badges (Lorelei stands in for Pryce at Mahogany, and Pryce guards Victory Road), the Team Rocket arc, the Kimono Girls and Ho-Oh, the Pokémon League, and gym rematches that scale to your team. Kanto trainers in the repository (74 of them) are left out because they are not in this build.

EncountersWild lists come from the sheet's Pokémon Locations tab, which gives each area's species as one list and shows the day and night tables only as DexNav screenshots. So a route here lists every species the sheet names for it, without saying which are day-only, night-only or on the water, and without levels. Fishing tables are the sheet's, with its percentages. The repository holds night tables for some maps, but they already differ from the sheet and are not used.

RatesThe sheet marks its walking and surfing encounter rates as work in progress ("might rework this"), and only some areas carry them, so none are shown for wild lists. Rod percentages are the sheet's.

StatsBase stats, types and abilities are the sheet's Original Dex tab, which also lists the official figures so the 21 changed lines can be shown. The sheet's hidden-ability column is labelled "should match Gen VII, not tested"; it is shown with that caveat. Species met only in the repository's trainer tables (regional forms, Gen 8–9 additions) have no published stats and are shown blank.

LearnsetsLevel-up learnsets are read from the repository's level_up_learnsets.c, and move data from its battle_moves.c — CFRU's modern move numbers, not FireRed's.

EvolutionsEvolution methods are not documented anywhere the team publishes: the sheet's Evolution column is empty and the repository's evolution table is not readable source. None are listed.

TmsThe TM list and the 53 located TMs are the sheet's. The sheet lists 120 TMs; it says a TM with no location has not been found yet or is not in the game. Which species can learn which TM is not published, so no compatibility is shown. The sheet also records the TM slots this hack changed: TM 49 changed from Snatch to Leech Fang; TM 56 changed from Fling to Hone Claws; TM 63 Changed from Embargo to Venoshock; TM 70 changed from Flash to Surf; TM 77 changed from Psych Up to Flame Charge; TM 78 Changed from Captivate to Low Sweep; TM 83 changed from Natural Gift to Scald; TM 92 Changed from Trick Room to Volt Switch.

TrainersBoss fights are the sheet's, taken from actual play of the build, so movesets can be incomplete (the sheet says so) and held items are what was seen. Where the repository's current version of the same fight differs, it is quoted in the fight's note. Every other trainer is read from the repository's trainer tables with species, levels, items and stored moves; a trainer without a stored moveset gets the last four level-up moves for its level, which is what the engine does. Nothing published says which map these trainers stand on, so they sit under one heading without a location.

AbilitiesFor a boss's Pokémon the sheet records no ability, so the column is blank. Repository trainers with stored movesets also store an ability slot; that is resolved through the sheet's ability columns where the species is on it.

LevelcapsLevel caps are not documented. The level-cap page is derived from the boss teams above and nothing else.

ProgressStages follow the sheet's walkthrough tab, which is this hack's own badge and story order. An area is placed at the first stage the walkthrough reaches it; multi-visit areas are placed at their first visit unless a fight is clearly later.

ItemsItem, key item and Mega Stone locations are the sheet's, per area; it does not say whether an item is on the ground or hidden, so everything is listed as a pick-up. Mega Stone entries carry the sheet's own directions.
