What Pokémon Emerald Squared changes

How the game plays differently from Pokémon Emerald, then every stat, type and ability it alters next to what the official games do.

How the game plays

Emerald Squared is jorts's rework of Pokémon Emerald, built on the modern Emerald decompilation base that brings the physical/special split, Fairy typing, Mega Evolution and Terastallisation with it. The one rule behind the whole game is in its name: every trainer battle is a double battle, from the first youngster on Route 102 to Champion Wallace. That changes what a team is for — spread moves, Protect, Wide Guard, Follow Me and redirection matter in a way they never do in the original — and the rosters are built for it, with abilities, EV spreads, held items and Tera types written out for every one of the 572 trainers the documentation covers. A mandatory level cap runs underneath, so you cannot grind past a Gym; ordinary trainers are scaled to the cap rather than to a stored number. Every Pokémon through Generation 9 is available somewhere in Hoenn — 1,025 species and 545 extra forms, including 91 Mega Evolutions, many of them this game's own. The story is Emerald's, with a sidequest called Agartha on top of it: nine bosses scattered around the region who you then fight again in rooms themed on each of the nine regions.

The main changes

• Every trainer battle is a double battle — all 572 of them
• Mandatory level caps: you cannot out-level a Gym, and ordinary trainers scale to the cap instead of storing a level
• All 1,025 Pokémon are catchable, spread across 133 areas of Hoenn
• 1,570 Pokédex entries once forms are counted, including 91 Mega Evolutions and 32 Gigantamax forms
• Terastallisation, with a Tera type written into most trainers' teams; the type changer is a house in Lavaridge
• Major fights draw their team from a pool rather than a fixed six, so a Gym Leader is not the same fight twice
• Every Gym Leader, Elite Four member and the Champion has a second, much stronger roster built out of legendary and Paradox Pokémon
• Agartha: a sidequest of nine bosses fought once out in Hoenn and again in region-themed rooms
• New moves and abilities of the game's own, and hidden grottoes off five routes
• Difficulty levers in Professor Birch's lab: no enemy EVs, perfect catch rate, perfect IVs, auto-run
