What Pokémon Emerald Ex changes

How the game plays differently from Pokémon Emerald, then every stat, type and ability it alters next to what the official games do.

How the game plays

Pokémon Emerald Ex is the Pokémon Amethyst Team's expansion of Pokémon Emerald, built on pokeemerald-expansion. The map you know is still there, with more between the places you remember: new routes, new towns, new special areas, and existing routes and towns widened out, so the walk from one settlement to the next is longer and there is more to find on the way. There are sixteen gyms rather than eight, the dex runs to 479 Pokémon drawn from every generation, and the trainers, learnsets, stats and abilities have all been reworked. The creator's stated aim was a fair, balanced game, not a harder one, so this is Hoenn at roughly its original difficulty with a great deal more of it.

How the wild tables are built

Every area in the creator's table has the same set of encounter slots, and each slot has a fixed rate. Where the same Pokémon fills more than one slot, this guide adds those slots together, so a Pokémon in the two 10% slots is shown at 20%. Anything at 5% or less is marked as rare. Four tables are still unfinished in the creator's document and do not add up to 100%: the grass on Route 106 and on Route 109, the dive list under Route 129, and the surf list in Steven's cave in Meteor Falls.

What the creator changed about the Pokémon

The documentation carries a changelog of base stats and typings measured against the original Emerald. It has 88 entries: 75 are marked as finished and 13 carry no status at all. This guide follows the finished ones: 45 Pokémon carry the creator's own base stats, 43 of which come out different from the original game's, and 33 carry the creator's own typing. The unfinished entries are shown as a note on the Pokémon's own page without changing anything, because an entry nobody marked as done is not something to tell a player is in the game.

Everything else on a Pokémon's page is the original game's: the creator's changelog names only what they edited, so a Pokémon that is not on it keeps the numbers Emerald gave it. Eight of the changelog's entries are for Pokémon the game's own dex list does not include, so they have no page here: Abomasnow, Aerodactyl, Aurorus, Darkrai, Druddigon, Mewtwo, Tyrantrum and Venusaur.

Sixteen gyms

The game has sixteen gyms, eight of them new. The creator has not published who leads the new ones, where they are or where they fall in the story, so this guide's checkpoints follow the original game's eight badges and say nothing about the other eight.

From the creator's own documentation spreadsheet for version 1.0.4.

The main changes

  • New routes, new towns and new special areas added to Hoenn, with the original routes and towns expanded
  • Sixteen gyms — the eight from the original game plus eight new ones
  • A 479-Pokémon dex in the game's own order, drawing on every generation rather than Hoenn alone
  • Wild tables rewritten for 120 areas, with the creator's own rate for every grass, surf, Rock Smash, fishing and dive slot
  • Base stats and typings reworked for 88 Pokémon, including whole lines turned into single types and several new dual typings
  • Updated learnsets, abilities and trainer teams, and new events
  • Post-game content, and near-vanilla difficulty throughout

How the Pokémon change

Measured from the guide's own data, so it can't drift from the pages it links to.

Compared against present-day official data. The Fairy type and hidden abilities arrived after Pokémon Emerald, so a difference here can belong to the series rather than to this hack.
