What opens up at this point in the game, and everything you can catch by now that you couldn't before.
✓ The S.S. Aqua from Olivine (and Route 27 back the other way) open Kanto. Pewter, Cerulean, Vermilion, Celadon, Fuchsia, Saffron, Cinnabar and Viridian's gyms follow the original Crystal's order rather than Johto's straight line, so nothing here is pinned to a single checkpoint beyond this one.
