About Radical Red

Radical Red keeps FireRed's map and story and rewrites everything else. Species from all nine generations are catchable, moves, abilities and items are brought up to modern standards, and every trainer in the game has been rebuilt with competitive teams, held items and EV spreads. Progress is gated by eighteen level caps rather than badges alone, so you cannot grind past a hard fight — you have to build for it. Two difficulty modes ship in the same ROM: Normal, and Hardcore, where the gym leaders, admins and Elite Four field entirely different, far nastier teams. This guide shows both.

What's changed

  • Every Pokémon through Generation 9, including regional forms and Megas
  • Gen 9 moves, abilities, items and the modern type chart on a GBA ROM
  • Eighteen level caps that gate progress instead of badge count alone
  • Normal and Hardcore modes with completely separate boss teams
  • Every trainer rebuilt with held items, natures, EVs and real movesets
  • Raid dens with tiered encounters and item drops
  • Move tutors covering most of the competitive movepool
  • Day and night wild encounter tables on every route
  • Built on the Complete FireRed Upgrade and Dynamic Pokémon Expansion engines

What this guide covers

Every guide here is built from the hack's own documentation. Where a hack changed something but never published the numbers, this says so rather than quietly filling the gap with the original game's — which would be worse than leaving it out.

Reading the tables

RatesRadical Red keeps FireRed's encounter slot structure, so the percentages here are FireRed's slot rates applied to the hack's own species tables. * marks anything at 5% or less.

ModesTeams tagged Normal or Hardcore replace each other entirely. Fights with no tag are the same in both modes.

LevelsSome late-game and post-game trainers scale to the level cap rather than sitting at a fixed level; those Pokémon are shown at the cap for the mode you've selected.

CapsRadical Red's level cap rises at each milestone in the stage picker. Pokémon above the cap disobey, so the stage you pick also tells you what you can safely train to.

TutorsMove tutors are a large part of team building in Radical Red; each Pokémon's tutor list is on its page.

RaidsRaid dens need a Raid Pass and scale by star rating; the listed species are the possible encounters.
