What Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen+ changes

How the game plays differently from Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen, then every stat, type and ability it alters next to what the official games do.

How the game plays

FireRed & LeafGreen+ is Deokishisu's definitive-edition take on the Generation III Kanto games, built from the FireRed decompilation. Both versions live in one ROM and a Key System Menu on the title screen switches between them, so one save can catch every version exclusive. The same menu holds Easy and Challenge difficulties, a Nuzlocke ruleset the game enforces itself, IV and EV calculation switches, a no-free-heals option and an experience multiplier. The battle engine is deliberately untouched: no physical/special split, no new moves or items, and every obtainable Pokémon stays legal in the original games so the hack still links with Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and the GameCube titles. What changes is everything around the battles: 246 Pokémon obtainable in one playthrough, trade evolutions triggered with a story key item, infinite TMs, eight new move tutors, and a postgame that opens the Sevii Islands straight after the Champion and adds Dive, the Ruby and Sapphire Battle Tower, the event islands, gym leader rematches and 151 Master Trainers. Every table here is read from the creator's own source code, FireRed and LeafGreen side by side.

FireRed and LeafGreen in one ROM

The Key System Menu on the title screen switches the save between FireRed and LeafGreen, so one file can catch both sets of version exclusives. Every wild table on this site was read from both versions' data; where the two differ, the route page shows both tables, each labelled with its version.

Easy, Normal and Challenge

Every map carries a level offset that Challenge Mode adds to its trainers and Easy Mode subtracts (Normal uses the stored levels). On top of that, the gym leaders, the Elite Four, the Champion and their rematches have separate Challenge Mode teams with an extra Pokémon, EV spreads and natures, and Challenge Mode also disables the badge stat boosts. Pick your difficulty at the top of the trainer list to see the right levels.

A built-in Nuzlocke

The Nuzlocke toggle faints anything that breaks the rules instead of stopping you catching it, marks the first encounter in an area on the enemy HP bar, honours the dupe clause, and cannot be undone once a Pokémon has fainted. Rules start after the first rival battle and encounters are only tracked once you have the Pokédex.

Trade evolutions without a trade

The Link Bracelet, a key item from the rival after Silph Co., works like an evolution stone on any Pokémon that would normally evolve by trading. Species that need a held item (Scyther, Onix, Poliwhirl, Slowpoke, Porygon, Seadra, Clamperl) still need to hold it, and those items are now wild held items or found before the postgame.

A longer postgame

The Sevii Islands open straight after the Champion, with HM08 Dive and underwater areas, the Ruby and Sapphire Battle Tower, Faraway and Southern Island for Mew and the Eon twins, event tickets earned in play, gym leader rematches at the Battle House on Seven Island, and 151 Master Trainers around Kanto whose teams scale to your lead Pokémon. Beating all 151 unlocks one more fight.

From the creator's FEATURES.md and FAQ.md in the game's own source repository, and from the game's data files.

The main changes

  • FireRed and LeafGreen in a single ROM, switchable from the Key System Menu with one save file
  • Easy, Normal and Challenge difficulty: per-map level offsets, and rebuilt Challenge teams with an extra Pokémon for every gym leader, Elite Four member and Champion fight
  • A built-in Nuzlocke mode that enforces its own rules, plus IV/EV calculation, no-free-heals and experience multiplier switches
  • 246 Pokémon obtainable without trading, all of them legal in Generation III; trade evolutions via the Link Bracelet key item
  • Eight new move tutors, infinite TM use, TM10 Hidden Power and TM44 Rest sold in Celadon, EV-reducing berries and trade-evolution items before the postgame
  • Sevii Islands open right after the Champion: HM08 Dive and two underwater areas, the R/S Battle Tower, Faraway and Southern Island, event tickets earned in play
  • Gym leader rematches at the Battle House on Seven Island and 151 Master Trainers around Kanto, with a superboss after all of them
  • 142 wild encounter areas, 798 trainer fights (29 of them separate Challenge Mode teams, 145 Master Trainers), read from the game's own source

How the Pokémon change

Measured from the guide's own data, so it can't drift from the pages it links to.

Compared against present-day official data. The Fairy type and hidden abilities arrived after Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen, so a difference here can belong to the series rather than to this hack.
